$1.5 Million Main Street Grant Awarded
The Village of Capac received a congressional earmark and has been awarded 1.5 million dollars that was passed by the U.S. House & Senate and signed by President Biden. The funds are for the reconstruction of streetscape in downtown Capac. A key reason why the village received funding is to replace our non-ADA compliant sidewalks.
“The elevated portions of the sidewalks downtown will be gone,” Village Manager Travis Youatt explained. “This will allow us to meet requirements of ADA accessibility and create a better of flow of foot traffic in and out of businesses. The street is currently a disaster. We have to address that and this (funding) allows us to. We are very fortunate to receive this funding. The plan is to follow the federal requirements for the funding and working on engineering this summer. We plan to work closely with the public and business owners on a new design for our downtown.”
One of Youatt 's first assignments being hired as Village Manager was to find a solution to a failing concrete downtown streetscape that was deteriorating before the Village’s eyes.
The current roadway is crumbling more and more everyday and provides motorists plenty of challenges to avoid deep potholes and other damaged concrete. The project calls for all of the current concrete to be removed from in the front of businesses in a four block area, along with the roadway being removed and rebuilt.
Youatt wrote an earmark to Congresswoman Lisa McClain’s office on behalf of the Village of Capac and was awarded the funding. The goal is to bid on the project this year and begin construction in the Spring of 2025. This project is a total reconstruction of our downtown.
